ATHLETE STORIES · RUNNING · 8 MIN READ
From zero routine to a reason to keep moving.
The first attempt did not look like training. It was a walk interrupted by short, uncomfortable stretches of running. The watch showed less than a kilometre. The lungs said stop long before the road did.
THE FIRST GOAL: ONE KILOMETRE
The objective became simple enough to repeat: cover one kilometre without judging the pace. Walking was allowed. Stopping the habit was not.
Weeks later, one kilometre became three. Three became five. The numbers changed, but the real progress was elsewhere — preparing the night before, leaving when the weather was imperfect and learning that a difficult run could still be a successful one.
“I STOPPED CHASING SPEED AND STARTED CHASING CONSISTENCY.”
PROGRESS CHANGED MEANING
Speed stopped being the only proof of improvement. Easier breathing mattered. Better recovery mattered. Returning after a bad day mattered most.
The first kilometre was not important because of the distance. It was important because it proved there could be a second.
